Beautiful Savior Lutheran School

May 30 is our Wellness Series Part 3 – MONKEY BUSINESS with a Literacy Focus.  There will be a puppet show and literacy stations.  Everyone up to the age of 5 are welcome to attend with their parents.  Please pass on the information if you know anyone interested.  The event runs from 9-10:15 in the gym.

BSLS is having its 2^nd Read – A – Thon.  The read-a-thon will be on Wednesday, May 28 when the entire school will read together.  Students will receive pledge forms on May 14^th and will have 2 weeks to gather pledges.  There are many prizes for students to win!  We will also be having a Scholastic Book Fair, in the school, where they will have many books on display for students and parents to purchase.  Books can also be ordered.  Please see the attachments for more information.

We still have spaces in our kindergarten class and our grade 7/8 class for 2014-15.  If you know of anyone who would be interested in our school, please pass them our information and let me know and I would be happy to talk to them.  Our best recruitment strategy is the word of mouth of our current families, so we thank you in advance.

Evening of the Arts is on Wednesday, May 28 at 6:30.  This is our spring concert for our music programs and all students participate in the evening.  It is an expectation that the students attend.  If there is some reason why a student is unable to attend, please contact Mr. Badiuk at bbadiuk@bsls.ca as soon as possible so that he can plan.  The band is especially susceptible to a different sound if students are unable to attend.  Please bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on while enjoying the concert. (wine raffle draw is at 7 pm)

Ascension Day Service is on Thursday, May 29 at 5:30 at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church (1541 St. Mary’s Road).  Intention and commitment forms have been sent home and are required to be turned in by the end of the week.

As a fundraiser for the school, we are selling Lacoste Garden Centre (2787 St. Mary’s Road) gift cards again.  The gift cards can be bought in $20 or $50 denominations.  Just as with the Sobey’s gift cards, if you buy a $20 card, you can spend $20 at Lacoste.  The school receives 15% on the total sales!  All orders must be returned by May 9.  The cards will be delivered to the school the week of May 12. 

Wine Raffle tickets are still available for pick up in the office from Mrs. Madden.  We would like each family to try to sell at least one book of 25.  We only have 4 books left.  If you have any books out that you don’t believe you will completely sell, please return to the office.  The Raffle tickets are $2 each and if we sell all books, we will raise $5000!  Thank you for your help!

We will be having a Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on Wednesday, April 16 prior to chapel.  A light breakfast will be served from 8:30 - 9:00 a.m.  Please RSVP to Mrs. Madden at admin@bsls.ca or 984-9600 ext. 5 by Friday, April 11.  All volunteers are welcome to attend.

MONKEY AROUND WITH MUSIC - Music Appreciation – APRIL 25

GOING BANANAS!  - Physical Education – MARCH 28

Parents are going bananas being stuck indoors with the cold weather and kids will go bananas for this fun gym time!  Come jump in our inflatable bouncer, participate in some kinder gym activities, and have some healthy snacks!  Nutrition and Physical Activity will be the focus and resources will be available to parents.

Going Bananas! is this Friday, so if you know of anyone who would be interested in attending, please pass on the information.

This week is our Country Study Week - the students and staff will be studying Ghana as our country of study.  The students will travel from class to class during that week to learn about different aspects of Ghana and its’ culture.  We hope they have safe travels to learn all about Ghana and its art, animals, sports, dance/music, geography, food and language.   Bon Voyage!

Artist in Residence: Coffieman!!

The students began their emmersement into the African culture on Monday.  All classes and students will participate and have hands on experience drumming.  The teachers also enjoyed a PD session with Coffieman....

 

Rainbow Loom Club

Rainbow Loom Club started today!  Wow - busy children very intent in creating their bracelets, charms, etc.  I didn't know that it could be done on fingers....very creative!

 

Boys and girls were very excited! 

Loom Club will meet every Monday over the lunch recess.

 

Feb. 24 Update

This week in the school is Artist in the School week!  With the generous support of the Manitoba Arts Council, Beautiful Savior Lutheran School is pleased to announce that we are recipients of another Artists in the Schools Residency.  From February 24-28, students at BSLS will learn African drumming and explore Ghanaian culture with Evans Coffie.  This will be an exciting week for all the students in the school and the students will learn more about Ghana during country week, March 24-28 when they tour the country!

Evans Coffie (Coffieman)

Evans Coffie was born and raised in Accra, Ghana, West Africa. In 1979 he joined the Ghana Dance Ensemble and travelled to Europe, the United States, the Soviet Union, the Caribbean, and Africa. In 1991 Evans immigrated to Canada and has been working as a dancer/drummer/vocalist and choreographer. Evans taught African dancing at the School of Contemporary Dancers and in 1999 recorded his first CD, Coffieman. In 2000, he opened an African dance studio in Winnipeg.

THE PROGRAM:

This program offers students of all ages a chance to explore African culture through music and dance. Students are given hands-on experience with African musical instruments. Participants are taught songs that tell stories from long ago using the basic movements in West African dances.

A direct connection between music and dance of Africa and today’s styles is pointed out and demonstrated. As the students progress they are given the chance to choreograph their own dances. Expression and curiosity motivate the students to experience their creative selves, to appreciate other cultures, and to break down racial barriers and stereotypes.

Aaron Burnett performed at our school on Jan. 30 and we are in the Lance!  Our grade 3 violinists performed with him for one of his songs and we also had a number of students who helped him do the actions to many of his songs with the rest of the children. Our Open House for the Birchdale location is on Wednesday, Feb. 19 from 6-8.  If you know of any families who may be looking for a school, please spread the word about our fabulous school.  This open house is for kindergarten, grades 1-8, and our daycare and nursery programs.

Our Open House for the St. Mary’s Nursery program will be on Thursday, Feb. 20 from 6-8.  If you know any families who are looking for a part time Christian nursery, please let them know of our program and to attend the open house.

Mad Science started last week and it went well.  The students were quite excited and enjoyed the first lesson.  Mad Science continues until Spring Break.

The wine raffle letter went home on Friday.  We will be doing the draw at the Evening of the Arts.  So, to get prepared for, we are asking that families bring in a bottle of wine or two.  If your bottle of wine that you donate to the school is over $20, please bring in a receipt and you will get a charitable donation receipt for that amount.  Thank you in advance for supporting our fundraising.  We are hoping to raise $5000 thru the wine raffle fundraiser and the money will be put towards finishing the south playground.

PIP News

Our new sign for the parking stall has arrived and is installed.  Just a reminder that the Tkach family, Deanna and Doug, have paid exclusive rights to this parking spot until the spot will be auctioned off at the March 22 Spring Supper, as one of the live auction items. 

There will be a Spring Supper Planning Committee meeting on February 11, at 7pm at Barb Wierckx’s home, 183 Pilgrim Avenue.  All are invited to attend.  The March 22 BSLS Spring Supper is PIP’s major fundraising night for this school year, complete with a fabulous dinner, cash bar, live auction, silent auction, and family photos.  Our dinner theme for 2014 is Western.  Tickets will be on sale in March, prices will be the same as last year: $30 for adults, $15 for children ages 4-12, and under 4 is free. New this year, a quilt made by the students will be one of the live auction items, as well as other items made by the students. 

Please join us at the next PIP meeting on February 27 at 6:30 to hear a presentation by Sean MacDonald and Dave Windsor from the BSLS School Board (meeting agenda attached).  They will discuss the school’s current and future plans and goals.  There will be time for questions, and complementary Tassimo coffee will be available for brewing.  Free babysitting will be provided for this meeting.
